New Site Seeks to Move Veterans Into IT Jobs

Moving “Troops to Tech” is the goal of one new careers site, linking military veterans with IT careers.

It was made by a trade association called CompTIA and includes information for veterans on how to get IT certifications at community colleges and private training providers, as well as for employers on how to get on a “registry.” The registry, whose current participants are listed, allows employers access to these veteran job-seekers, and gives them exposure as a company that prioritizes veteran hiring.

CompTIA bills itself as “the world’s largest provider of vendor-neutral certifications for IT professionals” in areas such as networking, security, Linux, health IT, and cloud computing.

    This is a good start. How about a followup commitment from major employers to preferentially hire the veteran graduates of the certification program? How about a followup commitment from major employers to preferentially hire veterans, period?



  2. As a IT Recruiter I rarely see programs that are willing to hire candidates with no experience and a Certification. We need more than this.

    Help these men and women get a Bachelors Degree. Help these men and women with entry level IT opportunities within the service BEFORE they leave. Train these men and women in skills needed in the civilian sector and we will hire them.

    If I had 100 vets with J2EE Development or Linux Admin experience and a Degree… I could place every single one of them.


  3. This initiative is great! I agree with Bill, there is a process to becoming a civilian. I spent years working with Marines, assisting them with their transition, and it isn’t a mere walk in the park.

    However, providing them with the necessary resources such as accessing education at an affordable price is a huge key towards their successful transition.

    If the participating institutions can provide military discounts, then we have a successful program ladies and gentlemen.

  4. @ Bill: How about considering their service record and IT training/certificate as being equivalent to an entry-level candidate with a degree? IMHO, That’s “where the rubber meets the road” for employers.

    @Yonica: Well-said. How about a GI Bill like my WWII dad(and millions of others) benefited from. That seemed to help a lot more back then than current vets benefits do now? How about vets can attend any legitimate college they can get into for FREE, 100% paid for by Uncle Sam? It seems a small price to pay- I’d be glad my taxes went to help vets go to college for free…That’s “Supporting Our Troop” more than putting on a bumper sticker.


  5. I wish we could… It is the client that determines their needs. I just fill the positions.

    Some will accept a degree for experience. Few will accept a certification for a degree or experience.

    “You’re good enough to fight and die for us, but not good enough to work for us.”


  7. @Keith, the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill both cover the costs of education up to a certain amount, so it’s a benefit that military members who are considering an exist can consider as a means to pay for their education.

    There are many accredited IT institutes who offer military discounts for both active members and veterans. However, there are other non-accredited and/or private IT institutes who charge high tuition which ultimately causes our military members to take out personal loans, therefore creating more debt. To me that is a slap in the face for the men and women who have served our country.

    If CompTIA is truly interested in our military members, then they will not only show our troops where to earn their certifications, but make sure that the costs affiliated with earning their certifications is affordable.

    Hopefully this will open the gateway to other top dogs like Cisco, Microsoft, RedHat, Linux and so forth.
