Revving Up the Engines: Northern Light

A few months ago, we looked at the major search engines and how they worked. But, in the world of cyberspace, a few months can change a lot. So, our next two columns serve as updates to guide your searches more efficiently. Northern Light now indexes more than 120 million Web pages, making it the largest search engine database on the Web. According to Greg Notess, on January 5, 1999, the search engine databases were compared as follows:

*Since January 5th, Northern Light’s Web database has grown to 122,284,401. In December of 1998 with its PC Magazine Editor’s Choice Award for Advanced Searching, Northern Light may have earned the right to call itself the best. Now, in January of 1999, Northern Light appears to have earned the right to call itself the biggest Internet search engine database. David Seuss, CEO of Northern Light, says, “Northern Light has worked hard to become the biggest as well as the best Internet research tool available to business and consumer users alike. If users want to know they are leaving no stone unturned, they should use Northern Light.” Northern Light, in addition to providing this extensive database of Web pages, also provides access to more than 5,000 premium full-text sources previously unavailable except to users of expensive online services like LEXIS-NEXIS, Dow Jones Interactive, and Dialog.
