Use the Job Boards to Get Referrals

Dear Barb:

Our biggest client has told us that they don’t want us to use job boards to find candidates. They have in-house recruiters that were hired to screen resumes sent to their website postings and job board ads. How do they expect us to find candidates if we don’t use job boards? We still find candidates that their inside team doesn’t.

Dear Michelle:

Clients want us to provide them with access to candidates they can’t surface on their own. They want us to attract the passive candidate who is working, but will make a change for an opportunity which represents their next logical career move.

The best method to attract these candidates who are not in an active job search is by making daily recruiting presentations. Individuals who are working are also well networked and can lead you to other qualified candidates.

  1. “How do they expect us to find candidates if we cannot use job boards?” Pick up the phone and make calls. This is what we have been doing since before the internet and this is the difference between Low Fee Internet Recruiters and High Fee Recruiters or if you like true Head Hunters.

  2. I loved this question! I’m an old school recruiter who learned how to smile and dial for 17 years. I was also the founder of what was the largest health care job board for USA healthcare and medical jobs until I sold it in 2011. I’ve seen lots of younger recruiters who have no idea of how to recruit as I did. They post jobs, look for exact matches in a resume database, and that’s it. The best recruiters have skills to headhunt, network, and skillfully post jobs, which is a conversation in and of itself.
